The persistence of varied views seen here has more to do with the "quality" of research employed, and not recognizing the potential shortcomings of our mental facilities in arriving at "beliefs," than it does on the extent of unbiased scientific support. For a better explanation see the article:

There is a lot of confusion about a species appropriate diet for dogs. The "why" is that we have crossed the line between science and prolific industry propaganda. Since the 1950s vast sums of money have been poured into shaping public perception because the profits are enormous. Not to mention that “we the people” have a tendency towards anthropomorphism, and convenience is a driving force.

For unbiased scientific information see the "Ol' Shep's Plight: Diet" article at: http://achinook.squarespace.com/

There is also a "lighter" fabricated "Dr. P. Kibble Interview" and other articles following different threads of industry's manipulation.

Thanks, Ottan. I hadn't heard about Stella & Chewy's or BARF - so many choices! I'm glad to hear you're having good results with the mixture of kibble and raw food.

I feed my Italian greyhound a mixture of stella & chewy's frozen raw diet (really similar to nature's variety) and canidae kibble. Her breeder used that combination, and I am hesitant to change. I don't have the time or kitchen space to do the BARF thing, but occasionally we'll throw in a chicken neck for a treat.

I feel pretty good about this combination, because she's getting raw veggies and gets the teeth cleaning from the kibble. I'm afraid that if I tried to feed more whole products, I wouldn't get the right balance of nutrients. And I don't worry about jaw strength too much (a supposed advantage of raw bones), since our pup LOVES chewing her bully sticks and toys.

I used to worry a little bit that Anna always eats her meat first, no matter how well I mix it in with kibble -- she loves it. But she will eat the rest of her kibble too (and occasionally fight small battles with it).
