Introducing the NYC Dog Map!

>   Dog Map  —  anya  @  11:33 am

Happy New Year!

With the help of some friends, we’ve compiled a map that hi-lights a lot of the dog-related locations (parks, businesses, etc.) in Manhattan. Let us know if we’re missing any of your favorite haunts - we’d love to make our map more complete. You can leave a comment or email us at nycblog@sniflabs.com.

We’d also love for you to tell us what it is you love about your favorite local dog spots (even if they’re already on the map). We’ll get the ball rolling by telling you about some of our neighborhood favorites!

For pet boutiques we love Beasty Feast and Zoomies.

Beasty Feast has two locations near us, both have yummy treats, fun toys, food, bedding, etc. They will make local deliveries for free - perfect for those 20 or 40lb bags of food! The location on Hudson street also offers grooming. This is where Oscar gets his hair cut, so if you think he’s handsome, check it out…

Zoomies has lots of very fashionable outfits, but our favorite guilty pleasures are the baked goods and replacement squirrels. One of Oscar’s favorite toys is this Hide N Seek squirrel house that we ordered online - but he keeps disemboweling the poor squirrels. The two women who are always in the store (I believe they’re the owners) have these wonderful French accents - last time we went in to get a replacement squirrel she remarked, “Zee squirrel, e ees going on a meesion” - Yeah, unfortunately, it was a suicide mission. They were also incredibly patient when we wanted to let Oscar pick out his own birthay present, check it out!

We should also mention DoggyStyle (be careful if you try to Google this one!!) - Oscar used to get his hair cut there and they did an amazing job, but we just recently decided to switch to Beasty Feast because it’s a lot closer to home. DoggyStyle also has a very nice selection of designer doggies clothes, beds, leashes, etc.

Now when we’re not feeling quite so fancy, we love to stop into some local stores that Paris Hilton & Tinkerbell probably wouldn’t frequent - but that just elevates them in our esteem! Our favorite casual pet stores include Pet Palace and Pet Kitchen. Oscar is constantly trying to figure out a way to trick us into walking by these blocks, so he can try to drag us in!

For dog runs, we visit the Washington Sqare Park dog runs (big & small) and the Leroy Street dog run. The pool scene is hot at the Leroy Street dog run in the summer, but we’re too wimpy to brave the cold and wind for the winter season. For year-round fun, we like Washington Square - if you’ve ever been there, you might recognize the background in the picture on the top of this blog. For cool scenery, we also like the Chelsea dog run.

Here’s a cool listing from the NYC dept of Parks and Recreation of all of the public dog parks in NYC.

Finally, we have to give a shout-out to our vet - Dr. Tracy Sane at the Greenwich Village Animal Hospital. Dr. Sane and his excellent staff help fix Oscar up whenever he’s feeling under the weather. Since Oscar likes to hang out in the dog runs and has a tendency to lick the NYC sidewalk, we’re pretty regular guests at the GVAH. And even though, he usually gets uncomfortable probing and/or shots, Oscar loves going there - he must know they’re just trying to help or it could be the T-R-E-A-T-S.

Fortunately, we’ve never had to go there, but for weekend/late night and emergency care, we’ve heard good things about the Fifth Avenue Vetrinary Specialists (open 24/7).

So, those are some of our favorite neighborhood hang-outs. Let us know about yours!

Welcome to the NYC Dog Blog

>   Dog Friendly, Dog Map, Meet Oscar  —  anya  @  5:31 pm

Hi and welcome to the SnifNYCDogs blog!

In the past year, my husband Josh and I have gone from two people who never owned a dog to self-proclaimed “crazy dog people”.  (Check out the About Us tab to learn more about us and our dog Oscar.)  I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to join a really cool dog-related start-up company earlier this year called SNIF Labs.  So now, I get to bring my dog to work and blog about him - how cool is that??

This is Oscar, the 2 year old Brussels Griffon who has stolen our hearts…

So, the purpose of this blog is to share some of the cool things we’ve done/found in NYC in the hopes that people who read our blog will return the favor.  We’ll also share any cool dog products we come across and post our random dog thoughts.

Here’s another picture of Oscar posing for his glamour shot at one of our favorite places to hang out - Washington Square Park.

Please visit our New York Dog Map, we’ll be posting more information on this soon.   Also, check out our sister blog in Boston…www.snifbostondogs.com.  They’ve been doing a great job sniffing out all the coolest stuff for dogs in the Boston area.

Until next time,

Anya
